Primarily, replaces Texture Pack support, and adds Resource Packs, which in time will allow for even more customization and modding, such as easily change sounds, fonts, and unique end credits along with textures in a nice resource package, read up on that here, note: that this will mess up any of your current tex packs, so use this fancy tool to convert them..
There’s also a new gamerule for day-night cycle (modders and server admins will appreciate).
